There has been an unending debate on the adverse effects of computers on human eyes. While many of those who work long hours on computers complain of heaviness or feeling of tiredness in their eyes, scientific studies reveal that none of these symptoms are because of any emission or radiation from computer screens.
Watching television or working on a computer screen may be responsible for fatigue or heaviness of eyes because of continuous focus on a small screen, yet scientists maintaining that emissions or radiations from computer screens do not cause any damage to eyes that can lead to problems like cataracts or other eye ailments.
Doctors hold that there is a difference between watching a television and working on a computer screen. They maintain that the latest computer screens, especially TFT screens, are glare free while those of the CRT monitors have some glare problems.
While some of the regular computer users prefer to use anti-radiation screens, yet longer and continuous sitting before a computer screen can cause eyestrain. Clinical studies substantiate the general impression that long hours of work on computer screens, even with contact lenses, especially when illumination level is low or far from sufficient, can be responsible for dry eye or burning sensation in eyes, fatigue and also blurring of vision.
Those who use computer screens for long hours also sometime complain of irritation in their eyes. Some ophthalmologists advise use of anti-glare glasses while working on computer screens for long hours. Those who wear glasses are advised to get anti-glare glasses.
Taking certain preventive or precautionary measures can rectify some of the common complaints computer users have. These include sitting at a distance from the computer screen. If the eye level distance from the screen is between 20 inches and 26 inches, it minimizes chances of eyestrain or fatigue.
Depending upon the eyesight, this distance can be adjusted. The golden rule is that eye should be comfortable in reading the screen well without extra load or pressure on it. To facilitate it further, doctors advise that one should fix a document holder to his or her computer screen so that whatever input or data feeding is done, it should not require swinging of head back and forth or forcing eye to constantly change the focus.
Other recommendation of doctors for computer users is that they should have glare.
